June 18, 1998 – Guru Gobind Singh’s qualities

A few days ago, on June 14th, we celebrated finishing reciting 1,25,000 Jaap Sahib paaths according to Guru Gobind Singh’s hukam. Gurdaspur sangat came and filled the air with their ecstatic singing, and 13 vats of ragara and 20 huge baskets of rot were given to the poor. Flags with “Dhan dhan Guru Gobind Singh Ji” have been strung up throughout the community. And the wonderful stone new fountain our workers have built in Jesus’ Place is now flowing, giving a very spiritual effect, glowing with otherworldly light, with the water jets ascending so peacefully and quietly toward heaven.

In this paradise, Maharaj is speaking to his sevadar Inder Kapoor and his family. It was Inder Kapoor who took a wonderful black and white photo of Maharaj smiling, in the 1960s. Maharaj says to them,

Guru Gobind Singh had no enmity. People speak of his battles, but not of his enlightened wisdom. One who believes in him would have no enmity, no bad thoughts in his heart. He taught that methods are various but God is only one. He saw God everywhere.  He did not recognize any boundaries.

Guru Gobind Singh said that the way to help people is to awaken the strength of recognizing God inside themselves. Swami Vivekananda said that sannyas does not mean retreating to the jungle but rather giving courage to the weak. He said, “God is a very great Power—Stand up!”

Guru Gobind Singh brought control of the mind, ending people’s fear and strengthening their good qualities. He put all emphasis on God, and didn’t criticize anyone. We have created an institution around Guru Gobind Singh, but instead he taught people to go inside themselves. He said, “You think there are two powers, one creating darkness and the other light, but both are from one Power. Darkness means ignorance.”

If one believes in Guru Gobind Singh’s hukam, he will not criticize any religion or any person. He said to share all good things—one’s time, physical help, wisdom, hard work, truth, willpower. If you believe in him, you know that we are all brothers and sisters. He referred to God as “Haazar Hazoor”—He saw His Light everywhere.

His greatest message was to love all people, without boundaries, to always see God everywhere. He did not recognize any caste distinctions, for our paths of coming and going are the same. He taught us to recite God’s Name with every breath, to focus on His Light and His seva, leaving casteism and sectarianism. In Jaap Sahib, he said, “You have no religion, no place of pilgrimage.” Rather, he saw God in every leaf. If you look with enlightened vision, trees, mountains and such will all speak to you, and all things will be seen as His manifestations.

One who follows Guru Gobind Singh will develop great power to serve others, for he connected people with that Power. He is the savior of us all. Wherever Jaap Sahib goes, there will be blessings. There is no matter of caste. His teachings, his being, and his sacrifices were very powerful, but they were not for any one community.

Just so, a few days ago Maharaj told us,

I have full faith that Guru Gobind Singh and Jaap Sahib will go around the world.
