April 24b, 1998 – Dharma will last

Dr. Jodh Singh, a renowned Sikh scholar from Punjabi University, Patiala, has come to see Maharaj ji. Maharaj tells him,

Sikhism should never be rigid. Guru Gobind Singh wrote in Jaap Sahib, “God has no religion.” Guru Nanak taught, “God put His Light in you, and thus you came into the world.” So how can people fight against each other? Guru Gobind Singh said, “[God is] Raazak Raheem (Muslim Names of God, meaning  Merciful Provider). ” What great fort-breaking words! He is immense – both Destroyer and Creator.

We think in terms of symbols, but the Gurus were advocating the practice of truth. Guru Gobind Singh said, “I did not come to establish any religion but rather to join the world with God.” But now there is a cloud across the sun. When people become rigid, God’s Light does not remain, for it cannot be confined.

Why hasn’t Guru Nanak’s religion spread in the world? Priests have shut the door in their own self-interest. In 1989 when we went to Russia, they had become very rigid. I told them on television that dharma would make people very strong, but they had no religion and had stopped working. The prediction came that their country would break up. I emphasized dharma and work, but they had neither.

Guru Nanak’s message is eternal. Now after being hidden it will go outward like a bomb. People are hungry. They have all material things but are not happy.

Don’t emphasize growing hair on the head. The thing to pay attention to is what’s inside the head.

Even if the whole world revolts, only dharma will last. With it comes virtues such as compassion, love, and justice. There is no need for big lectures—only the decision to follow the Guru’s hukam. We should teach that Maharaj was not rigid. In vision, I see that so many people will embrace Sikh dharma. Today it is very necessary for people to use their energy to work hard and work together. If people become loving and working, dharma will spread. A very great change will come.
