April 23, 1998 – Today’s need for very high character

Maharaj ji’s great friends, Swaranjit Singh and his wife Prem, have brought their daughter-in-law’s mother to meet him. She is involved in politics, so Maharaj ji begins speaking about the sad state of political affairs:

It is necessary for political leaders to keep very high moral character, and to be very sincere. How long can this buying of people last? No one is happy now, but the most miserable are the businessmen and politicians.

Those who do seva without self-interest are the happiest. People in the villages are so innocent. If you go among them, they will be so friendly.

The Light of God is within you. These holy buildings are made of bricks, stone, and steel. But people are so tender. If you hurt someone, God will not be happy.

All the prophets said, “Don’t worship me. Don’t make a holy place for me here.” The Prophet Mohammed said he didn’t want a memorial, but they have memorialized every place.

Guru Nanak said, “Speak truth,” and thus we know it is God’s will. God is in the whole cosmos, but how can we understand? By meeting those messengers of God. Guru Gobind Singh said, “Whatever God says, I will say.” He raised people who had no goal, no inner strength. Then by Maharaj’s teaching, his grace, his merciful gaze they were uplifted. Before that, people respected the ruler, no matter what he did. The Guru’s impact on the people was proof of God’s power. He taught and showed that this Light is forever, unaffected by anything.

Baba Deep Singh went forward without a head, by the power of Guru Gobind Singh. When Guru Teg Bahadur was martyred he knew in advance what would happen. He came to give an example of how one could live in family life and be spiritual. The martyrs said, “This is the power of God which your swords cannot touch. Our only happiness is in following Your hukam.”

Guru Gobind Singh made the Khalsa out of such meagre material, and thus broke our country’s enslavement. Vivekananda said that if our country would go by Guru Gobind Singh’s hukam it would be so powerful.  Maharaj ji said that the greatest sannyas is to give power to the weak.

Today the need is for very high character. It is our bad luck that Guru Gobind Singh’s ideas have not been implemented.
