13 February 1998 – A speech for Oxford

Today Maharaj does something quite extraordinary: He dictates a speech for me to give in my own voice for an interfaith conference in Oxford, England to which I’ve been invited. He always speaks within me, but now he is speaking as me. He tells me to start like this:

Before God, I first pray that He will give me strength and blessings that I may speak well. We need blessings all the time. Put out your hand of flesh, and He will give you His hand of Light.

From childhood I have wondered how it can be that all prophets have come from one place but we consider them separate. For me, the teaching I have received at Gobind Sadan has great attraction. I have become tired of seminars and books. I was searching and searching. Then God gave me His finger to hold and led me here.

At Gobind Sadan, I saw things that are beyond my imagination. It is amazing. Here there are no Christians, but there are more lights here on Christmas than in Jerusalem. On the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, there are no Muslims here but how is that day  celebrated at Gobind Sadan? They welcome qawwalis to sing, listen to Muhammad’s words, and feed thousands of people. Moses’ day is also celebrated. My feeling is that if people make a place for any prophet, does this mean that other prophets are weak?

I am not here to be a judge. We should cut out our own evils and not look at those of others. Listen to this message and perhaps you will like it. Our sickness is the same. Mine has been finished, and perhaps yours will finish, too. It is the disease of the mind, of ego: “I’m special.”  The special one is he who is loving.

My Friend is the jungle, the water, the mountains. How can I be special? All Creation is our brothers. If we are all sitting separately in our own homes, how can we get together? This is the decision: We shouldn’t waste our lives being special.

This is the meaning of the prophets’ messages: It is above our separateness. The messengers’ message came from enlightenment. We can’t interfere with that. The prophet said, ‘See Him in flowers, mountains, oceans.” We should do that. First we should see Him who is the Creator—who is so strong that He can take us all by His finger and lift us above our separate places. I see you inwardly as my brothers and sisters. Why can’t we live together?

In all societies, the prophets and those who give their messages are in conflict. They brought the message of love, but we have brought the message of ego. Those who represent the prophets bring fights. They say, “My Father is special.” But the prophet said, “You have no mother, no father, no house, no sect, no place. Your Light is everywhere. Every place is Yours—Your Light, Your blessing. I cannot say that You have only one place, only one religion.”

From time to time, the message comes when we forget the earlier message—not to be more special, not to criticize the elders and their teachings. The prophets said, “I have come to connect you with their teachings. I have not come to change a single word of what they said.”

I have come with love to give you the feeling of my heart. It would be very good if all places would be like Gobind Sadan. May you can come there and see.

We must believe that as Guru Gobind Singh said, “Recognize all humanity as one human race.” Love each other as fellow humans. Don’t see others as people of particular castes or religions.

Trees, flowers, and animals all want love. If we first create hatred, how can we love? One day we must shed hatred. Why waste a minute? When we rise above that, and understand each other as family, we will see that Light is within us all.

First we should ask whether we are all one or not. Our thoughts are different. Some are high or low. But it is God’s will how to make each person. God gave some the mind of a scientist or engineer—gave them good thoughts. The Prophet Muhammad said, “God made you from just a drop.” He is the Designer of designers! God has made us so beautifully. Where did these other things come from? Sikh Gurus say, “Mind, recognize your root.” The One who runs the whole thing, in the air, mountains, oceans, creates that brotherhood.

All the prophets taught love, truth, and service, so where did hatred come from? We have forgotten. We should return to what they taught us, and then we will know that there are no differences in this brotherhood, which is so great that we cannot imagine it. God has made us such a bed that all can sleep in it—trees, animals, all of us.

When Maharaj finishes dictating this speech for me to give in Oxford, he says to us,

This talk will have such a great effect. They will all forget the meeting and look here. You should also give this message on TV and radio.

Whatever Maharaj ji says is very powerful, waking us from our sleepy state. If only we will wake up and listen to Him, we will change, and so will the world.
