May 16, 1998 – “Tathastu!” is sitting with us

A family that has come to have Sri Akhand Paath (48-hour continual reading of Guru Granth Sahib) done is here to thank Maharaj. They requested Sri Akhand Paath on behalf of their son, who has a broken arm. Maharaj instructs them to tie his patka (hair covering) in a different way so that he won’t have accidents again. Their two children who have come are quiet and obedient. Maharaj tells the family,

The Guru says that if the mother recites Nam and reads scripture while the child is in her womb, the child is also listening.  Shaikh Farid learned the Holy Qur’an from his mother’s reading it while he was in the womb. The way is then open to good action, such as Guru Nanak’s emphasis on work, meditation, and sharing.

It is good to sponsor Sri Akhand Paath in favour of your elders, but only from your own honest income, not from corruption money.

Loving things call to one, in contrast to egotistical things. Share good things. Maybe we can’t share money, but we can give time to sit with lonely people and share good ideas.

Never say “It is mine,” only “It is Yours.” If your children are capable, you do not need to give them charity because they will support themselves. Our old Sardar (wealthy Sikh) families are all finished, for they were proud.

The fruit of loving work will keep on living. You have been so loving. Paath and meditation will burn your bad karma.

All religious managements have become so low in character that nothing about them is safe, like cancer for which there is no remedy. Dharma has fled from their forts. Jesus was never angry, except when he drove the moneychangers out of the temple. Religious places have become corrupted. In religious places, no one is calling God.

But here, we are remembering God 24 hours a day, so “Tathastu!” (The saint says ‘May it be so!’ and it is).

As Maharaj is speaking, many people come to the window to thank him for all the good things that have happened to them. “Tathastu!” is sitting with us, by God’s great grace.
